    Somalia es un ejemplo de consenso en torno a su denominación como “Estado fallido”. Sin embargo, diferentes estrategias han sustituido al Estado como estructurador de la sociedad y así los somalíes han dinamizado su sociedad y su economía (liderazgo religioso, fenómenos de segregación locales, etc). La guerra, las graves carencias en derechos humanos y la dependencia frente a la ayuda externa llaman aún la atención de los especialistas. Vemos aquí el papel de las mujeres somalíes, principales afectadas en tales conflictos: refuerzo y reivindicación de sus roles identitarios tradicionales, asociacionismo pro-reconciliación nacional, activismo pacifista por medio de la acción cultural y religiosa, desmovilización de combatientes, reconstrucción local, etc. El Gobierno Transitorio, por su parte, no respeta la resolución 1325 del Consejo de Seguridad de N.U. así como los acuerdos sobre las cuotas de representatividad femenina parlamentaria, mientras numerosos actores internacionales mantienen visiones simplistas y estereotipadas sobre la cuestión del género en Somalia

    The Australian Farm Business Management Network: Industry, Education, Consultancy and Research Coming Together

    Under the sponsorship of the University of Sydney, on 5-6th December 2002 the future of farm management in Australia was discussed. The fundamental conclusion achieved by key primary industry representatives, corporate executives, academics, consultants and researchers is that farm management will have a more significant role to play in the future than previously in servicing the primary sector. The idea of farm management as a profession was proposed. Its basis would be business management supported by farming systems and technology, and using an holistic approach to action (i.e. finance, people and environment). The new profession of Farm Business Management would seek to influence education, research, consultancy and extension in Australia. Interested parties participating of the 2002 National Farm Management Workshop came away with the idea of championing a consultative network, constituted by interested institutions and interested individuals, as a first step in the process of nurturing the future development of farm business management. By integrating farmers and academics with corporate executives, consultants and researchers the objective is to behave as a consultative group. This group will influence educational models, implement consultancy and research strategies, and network in social and professional terms. Moreover, this network will provide a systematic opportunity for the channelling of farm business management and farming systems related information at different levels for education, extension and scientific purposes.     The XENON1T Data Distribution and Processing Scheme

    The XENON experiment is looking for non-baryonic particle dark matter in the universe. The setup is a dual phase time projection chamber (TPC) filled with 3200 kg of ultra-pure liquid xenon. The setup is operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy. We present a full overview of the computing scheme for data distribution and job management in XENON1T. The software package Rucio, which is developed by the ATLAS collaboration, facilitates data handling on Open Science Grid (OSG) and European Grid Infrastructure (EGI) storage systems. A tape copy at the Center for High Performance Computing (PDC) is managed by the Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM). Data reduction and Monte Carlo production are handled by CI Connect which is integrated into the OSG network. The job submission system connects resources at the EGI, OSG, SDSC's Comet, and the campus HPC resources for distributed computing. The previous success in the XENON1T computing scheme is also the starting point for its successor experiment XENONnT, which starts to take data in autumn 2019.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, CHEP 2018 proceeding

    The Scalable Systems Laboratory: a Platform for Software Innovation for HEP

    The Scalable Systems Laboratory (SSL), part of the IRIS-HEP Software Institute, provides Institute participants and HEP software developers generally with a means to transition their R&D from conceptual toys to testbeds to production-scale prototypes. The SSL enables tooling, infrastructure, and services supporting the innovation of novel analysis and data architectures, development of software elements and tool-chains, reproducible functional and scalability testing of service components, and foundational systems R&D for accelerated services developed by the Institute. The SSL is constructed with a core team having expertise in scale testing and deployment of services across a wide range of cyberinfrastructure. The core team embeds and partners with other areas in the Institute, and with LHC and other HEP development and operations teams as appropriate, to define investigations and required service deployment patterns. We describe the approach and experiences with early application deployments, including analysis platforms and intelligent data delivery systems

    A conceptual framework for graduate teaching assistant professional development evaluation and research

Biology graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) are significant contributors to the educational mission of universities, particularly in introductory courses, yet there is a lack of empirical data on how to best prepare them for their teaching roles. This essay proposes a conceptual framework for biology GTA teaching professional development (TPD) program evaluation and research with three overarching variable categories for consideration: outcome variables, contextual variables, and moderating variables. The framework’s outcome variables go beyond GTA satisfaction and instead position GTA cognition, GTA teaching practice, and undergraduate learning outcomes as the foci of GTA TPD evaluation and research. For each GTA TPD outcome variable, key evaluation questions and example assessment instruments are introduced to demonstrate how the framework can be used to guide GTA TPD evaluation and research plans. A common conceptual framework is also essential to coordinating the collection and synthesis of empirical data on GTA TPD nationally. Thus, the proposed conceptual framework serves as both a guide for conducting GTA TPD evaluation at single institutions and as a means to coordinate research across institutions at a national level

    Structural and Functional Consequences of the Weak Binding of Chlorin e6 to Bovine Rhodopsin.

    The chlorophyll-derivative chlorin e6 (Ce6) identified in the retinas of deep-sea ocean fish is proposed to play a functional role in red bioluminescence detection. Fluorescence and 1 H NMR spectroscopy studies with the bovine dim-light photoreceptor, rhodopsin, indicate that Ce6 weakly binds to it with μm affinity. Absorbance spectra prove that red light sensitivity enhancement is not brought about by a shift in the absorbance maximum of rhodopsin. 19 F NMR experiments with samples where 19 F labels are either placed at the cytoplasmic binding site or incorporated as fluorinated retinal indicate that the cytoplasmic domain is highly perturbed by binding, while little to no changes are detected near the retinal. Binding of Ce6 also inhibits G-protein activation. Chemical shift changes in 1 H-15 N NMR spectroscopy of 15 N-Trp labeled bovine rhodopsin reveal that Ce6 binding perturbs the entire structure. These results provide experimental evidence that Ce6 is an allosteric modulator of rhodopsin
